It would however be ten more years before a reliable voice radio would come into practical use.The impact of tanks on the battlefield had already, by the end of WW1, begun to bring mobility back and armoured cars once again made their presence felt. Installed in tanks, they proved on the whole unreliable as they had never been designed to withstand the shocks of riding in an unspring vehicle going cross-country. It could also only transmit messages using morse code and required extensive aerials. Radio reporting from the front had been almost impossible until then – hardly surprising when a “portable” British radio set required nine men to carry it, together with the batteries needed. He commissioned Gavin Barlow and his team at Armoured Engineering Ltd to conduct an extensive internal and external restoration.Possibly one of the most important tactical improvements towards the end of WW1 was the mounting of radio sets in tanks to send reports from the forward edge of the battle to headquarters in the rear with unheard of speed. In 2016 it was sold to military vehicle enthusiast and collector William Bannister, along with a substantial amount of spares for restoration. For many years though, with water unable to drain away, this tank was filled to a depth of around two feet – covering the floor ammo racks.Įventually, the vehicle was purchased from the Danish army by a private collector and was shipped to the UK – subsequently being stored on a driveway in Watford. After a while, tanks will inevitably let in water as rubber seals perish. Unfortunately, all the belly plate drain plugs were left in – the normal practice is to remove them so that any water ingress can drain away. When the vehicle was eventually replaced by a more modern tank, it spent many years on a concrete plinth as a gate guardian in Denmark.
